THE WOODEN DUMMY
The Wooden Dummy
The Wing Chun wooden dummy is the most popular in martial arts today. Legend says the design was created using over 100 separate wooden dummies from the Shaolin Temple that were combined into one, making training more efficient and effective.
The solid timber structure uses an arm and leg configuration designed to cultivate fighting skill and natural chi energy simultaneously. The modern version of the wooden dummy was designed by Grandmaster Yip Man to suit apartment living.
Also known as muk yan jong, the wooden dummy has three arms and one leg to represent an opponent's body in various positions and lines of force the body is able to apply. The wooden slats on which the muk yan jong is secured are flexible, similar to a human opponent's involuntary reaction, allowing the student to practice absorbing energy into their stance.
In practice, students are able to improve distance, timing, speed and accuracy while building on advanced techniques through feel, flow and efficiency of movement. The wooden dummy requires complete focus and precision to master all 108 techniques.
